Smart Growth Workshop set for June 24 at Lockhart State Park

LOCKHART - The Plum Creek Watershed Partnership welcomes the public to attend the upcoming Smart Growth Workshop on June 24, 2014 at the Lockhart State Park Recreation Hall.

The park is located at 4179 State Park Road and Farm-to-Market Road 20, west of U.S. Highway 183 in Lockhart.

Sign-in begins at 8:00 a.m. with the workshop set to conclude by 3:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend the workshop and a free catered lunch will be provided for attendees that RSVP by Tuesday, June 17.

"The workshop is a combination of in-class presentations and outdoor demonstrations. Our presenters will address linkages between land use types, water quality, and community character as well as reducing stormwater runoff volume and improving water quality through use of Low Impact Development (LID) techniques," said Nick Dornak, Plum Creek Watershed Coordinator.

Dr. Fouad Jaber, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Specialist in Integrated Water Resources Management, will explain how different Smart Growth techniques can help mitigate the harmful effects of urbanization on stormwater volume and water quality.

Bill Carter, with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, will provide an overview of the Clean Water Act, Section 319(h) Grant Program that provides funding for municipalities across the State of Texas working to better manage their water resources.

"We are very fortunate to have some great presentations lined up for this workshop. I’m confident attendees will come away with a greater understanding of the impacts nonpoint source pollution has on their daily activities," added Dornak.

RSVPs should be submitted by email to ndornak [at] plumcreekwatershed [dot] org. Please include "Smart Growth" in the subject line. For questions or to RSVP by phone, call the Plum Creek Watershed Partnership at 512-213-7389.
