Tagging into Tomorrow: How Arie Prins Combines Data and Stewardship

In the heart of Texas dairy country, Arie Prins, Vice Chairman of the Running Water Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), is demonstrating how cutting-edge technology is reshaping modern agriculture while also conserving natural resources vital to the region. Prins has shown his commitment to making his operation smarter and more efficient, while prioritizing a deep respect for the land beneath his boots. 

Prins operates a 5,000-head dairy just outside of Dimmitt. His family's dairy legacy spans 102 years, originally rooted in California before relocating to Texas in 2003 in search of opportunity and room to grow. Now in its fourth generation, the Osterkamp Dairy has evolved into a model of forward-thinking, conservation-minded agriculture.

One of the most striking examples of innovation on Prins’ farm is his use of high-tech ear tag systems, or RFID Tags. These advanced tags, each equipped with a microchip, track individual cow health, behavior, and productivity in real time. Data from each animal flows into a centralized system, allowing for precise decisions about feeding, medical care, and overall herd management.

“Every animal is different, and this tech helps us treat them that way,” says Prins. “We're able to catch issues earlier, improve animal welfare, and use our resources much more efficiently.”

As a leader in the local SWCD, Prins also believes in the importance of sustainable practices. Advanced tracking systems not only benefit herd health but also enable more efficient resource management, reducing waste and minimizing the farm’s environmental footprint.

Efficiency isn’t just a buzzword for Prins, it’s a way of life, especially when it comes to water. In a region reliant on the Ogallala Aquifer, water conservation isn’t optional. Prins has designed his dairy to reuse, utilize, or recycle water four to five times before it ever leaves the system. The water’s journey begins with cooling milk, then is repurposed to clean barns and flush manure alleys, every drop is stretched as far as possible.

At Osterkamp Dairy, smart water management isn’t just a practice, it’s a philosophy. The Prins family has turned their lagoon system into a vital part of that effort, where every drop is carefully tracked, treated, and reused. Once the water has served its purpose in the barns, it passes through a lagoon that acts as a settling basin to filter out solids. From there, it’s pumped out to irrigate fields, closing the loop in a sustainable cycle.

Daily logs track lagoon levels, runoff, and pumping to ensure both efficiency and regulatory compliance. Not only is this water used on their own fields, but they also share it with other local producers, extending the impact of their conservation practices across the community.

“Water’s not just part of our operation, it’s the backbone,” Prins explains. “By reusing water multiple times, we’re doing our part to extend the life of this aquifer for the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Prins remains committed to exploring emerging technologies that can further enhance his operation. From predictive analytics for herd management to water and soil conservation practices, the future of dairy farming is being shaped by forward-thinking producers like him.
