Sheldon Lake State Park Wetland Field Day to be held October 29th

HOUSTON - Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Sea Grant (Extension) will host its annual Wetland Field Day at Sheldon Lake State Park on October 29, 2015, where participants can learn about the innovative restoration method and visit the restoration effort. The Wetland Field Day is provided free of charge with lunch included. It is open to the general public, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

In 2003, Extension, in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, undertook and completed the restoration of 136 acres of prairie wetland habitat at Sheldon Lake State Park using the new and cost-effective "Sheldon-Sipocz" methodology for wetland restoration. An additional 72 acres of wetland habitat is actively being restored. Additional funding for restoration work was provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Galveston Bay Estuary Program/Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Since 2003, more than 10,000 hours of volunteer and 3,600 hours of student time have been provided to restoring the wetland habitat.

RSVP is required, so for those interested in attending, please contact Extension’s Wetland Program Manager, Marissa Sipocz, at 281-450-9674 or m-sipocz [at] tamu [dot] edu. More information on the restoration effort can be found at http://tcwp.tamu.edu/wetland-restoration/.
