Agricultural NPS Remediation in the Cedar Creek Reservoir Watershed

Creekside Conservation Program

Valuable soil from thousands of acres is washed into tributaries and lakes every year.  Gullies and bare rock now exist where once rich topsoil and healthy plants occurred.  As farmers and ranchers lose topsoil to erosion, land productivity decreases.  Waterways also suffer from sedimentation and nonpoint source (NPS) pollution.  This sediment can build up to create flood management problems, threaten aquatic habitats, impair water quality, and reduce groundwater recharge.

Ellis-Prairie SWCD Water Quality Project

This project will address sediment, nutrient, and pesticide runoff in the four main public surface water supplies in the Richland and Chambers Creeks Watershed (Bardwell Reservoir, Richland Chambers Reservoir, Lake Navarro Mills, and Lake Waxahachie).

Evaluation and demonstration of VTA effectiveness to protect runoff water quality on small pork production facilities in Texas

Project Goals/Objectives: The goal of this project is to demonstrate and evaluate VTA effectiveness at small pork operations and transfer findings to natural resource agencies and pork producers.

Implementation Support Project in the Richland-Chambers Reservoir Watershed

Richland Chambers Reservoir was listed on the 1999 State of Texas 303(d) List as threatened due to excessive atrazine. In November 2000 the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) initiated a CWA Section 319(h) project with the Navarro Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to provide technical and financial assistance for the purpose of developing and implementing WQMPs to reduce atrazine runoff into the Richland Chambers Reservoir.

Implementation Support Project in the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Toledo Bend Reservoir Watersheds

Project Goals/Objectives: Foster coordinated technical assistance activities; Provide technical and financial assistance to landowners to aid in the development, implementation, and/or maintenance of Water Quality Management Plans (WQMPs); Map the location and types of WQMPs and Best Management Practices (BMPs) implemented.

Implementing the Arroyo Colorado WPP by Providing Technical and Financial Assistance to Reduce Agricultural NPS

Project Background: The Arroyo Colorado (Segment 2201 and 2202), an ancient distributary channel of the Rio Grande, extends about 90 miles from Mission, Texas to the Laguna Madre in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Flow in the Arroyo Colorado is sustained by wastewater discharges, agricultural irrigation return flows, urban runoff, and base flows from shallow groundwater. Elevated levels of bacteria and low dissolved oxygen have severely impacted recreational use of the lower Arroyo Colorado for fishing and swimming.

Lake Granger Watershed Assessment and Implementation Project

Project Goals/Objectives: Facilitate the development of a watershed protection plan for the Lake Granger Watershed; install best management practices for the purpose of reducing erosion within the watershed; reduce sediment loadings by 20-30% (based on RUSLE calculations or other applicable means); reduce TSS concentration in the reservoir by 30%, reduce nutrient loadings from agricultural lands and monitor for results.

LCRA Soil and Water Stewardship Program

The problem of soil erosion on farms, ranches and rangeland in the lower Colorado River basin can be attributed to overgrazing, a lack of vegetative, or riparian, buffers along creeks and other waterways, and the spread of invasive brush species that choke out native vegetation. As a result, thousands of acres of valuable soil wash into the waterways of the lower Colorado River basin every year. The result is build-up of sediment, which can harm water quality, worsen flooding and threaten aquatic habitats.

Little River Atrazine Remediation Project (Central Texas SWCD)

Project Goals/Objectives: This project will provide corn and sorghum producers in the Little River watershed with an opportunity to participate in water quality educational activities, technical assistance, and financial assistance for the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs), in order to reduce the runoff of atrazine. The main goal of this project is to maintain the drinking water quality of these waterbodies and allow them to be removed from the State of Texas §303(d) List of Impaired Waters.

Seymour Aquifer Water Quality Improvement Project

The Seymour Aquifer is a shallow aquifer in Northwest Central Texas and the only major source of groundwater in Haskell, Jones, and Knox Counties. The aquifer underlies over 300,000 acres and furnishes drinking and domestic water for many rural families. In addition, over 3,000 wells furnish water for irrigation and livestock use. The State of Texas has identified elevated nitrate levels as a concern in Haskell, Knox, and Jones Counties.

Technical Assistance Supporting Cooperative Conservation in South Central Texas

Cooperative conservation is a voluntary and incentive-based concept where people associate together voluntarily to pursue common conservation goals. It describes the efforts of landowners, communities, conservation groups, industry, and governmental agencies who join together to conserve our environment. Through cooperative conservation, citizens from every walk of life enhance, restore, and protect land, water, air, and wildlife resources on public and private lands.
